IJsselstein. Regional cycling routes as an investment in the city and landscape

IJsselstein will strongly focus on cycling in the coming years. IJsselstein joins the provincial ambitions with the aim of seamlessly transferring regional routes to the local IJsselstein bicycle network. People in IJsselstein should be able to easily find their way in and out of IJsselstein. This is not the case everywhere at the moment. The municipality therefore wants to work to improve these connections and to realize good regional connections together with the province and neighboring municipalities.

On behalf of the municipality of IJsselstein, Track-Landscapes made an inventory and design study into the opportunities of four cycling routes in IJsselstein. The core of the assignment was formed by four elaborations of regional cycling routes that need to be improved. Here track made imaginative maps and illustrations of the possible improvements. This concerned the Noord IJsseldijk, Nedereindse plas, Noordzijde Hollandsche IJssel, Oudland - Kromme IJssel - Vianen.

The approach was to look more broadly at the development of 'bicycle' paths and infrastructure. Pedestrians, runners, inline skaters and children on scooters increasingly use the same paths and 'cycle paths' deserve to be considered more strongly as exercise routes in a broader sense. Investments can gain stronger support if we emphasize the value it also has for other users. By including the interests of recreational cyclists, walkers and runners, it also becomes more logical to place more emphasis on the quality of the surrounding (green) environment, and to make the link with other tasks of a 'healthy environment'; water (collection), ecology, biodiversity.

Cycling routes as investments in the quality of the environment and its uses. Not just as an investment in transport.

At the Nedereindseplas, for example, we showed how a new bicycle route could make the entrance to the recreation area much more attractive. Much infrastructure is unnecessary, a much more natural area can be designed.

We proposed a separate cycle path at the Noordijsseldijk, which will also make the IJsselstein forest more attractive and safer for pedestrians. At the Hollandse IJssel, a water quay can become a much more lively route with the arrival of a good cycling route, with more quality of stay. A new bicycle bridge near Oudland makes the area under the Kromme IJssel much more accessible for walking trips.

The basis for all these bicycle plans is an attractive, readable and informative series of overview maps of the entire bicycle network, and which links the regional bicycle routes form. How do the local and regional cycling routes connect to each other? Where are the various urban functions and destinations located?
